Local police on Monday confirmed four people were killed following a gas explosion in Nigeria’s southern state of Akwa Ibom.
Several others, including the manager of a local firm that owned the gas plant in Ede Obuk area of the state, sustained injuries from the explosion last Thursday, the police said.
A police spokesman in the state, Odiko Macdon, told reporters that an investigation was still ongoing to ascertain the cause of the blast.
The explosion destroyed several vehicles and buildings in the area, the police spokesman said.
Eyewitnesses said two oxygen and acetylene cylinders suddenly exploded inside the firm’s premises after the close of work.
All victims were the staff of the company, according to witnesses.
Local safety experts said such explosions could occur from expired cylinders or due to an overpressure of the cylinders.
