Like a fallout of the 2018 summit of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), on the day the summit ended in Beijing, China, a large China trade exhibition participated by only Chinese businesspeople took off in Lagos, Nigeria.
The business event was the first of its kind in Lagos or anywhere in Nigeria where hundreds of participants from the Chinese business community arrived the country for such exhibition.
Walking round the pavilions and kiosks, all the Chinese exhibitors said they just arrived the country for the event, and most of them first time visitors and without offices or branch in Nigeria previously.
They however said the event was to create new markets, customers, outlets and partnerships with Nigerians who remain the bulk of the African business population that visit China for trading.
Africa China Economy (ACE) with content interest in China’s economy was at the event and spoke with most of the exhibitors who expressed optimism in the outing and said they were hopeful their venture to be at the event would pay good dividends in getting business partners in Nigeria and furthering the reach of their businesses.
The exhibition that held at the main auditorium of the Eko Hotel sitting at the bank of the Atlantic Ocean featured home accessories, automobile parts, industrial machines, babies’ items, ladies wears, hair accessories, chemicals, electrical and lighting fittings, and musical equipment.
Other items were textiles, bedding, processed foods, agrochemicals and agro machines, electronic gadgets and many more.
The exhibitors were mainly from the cities of Guangdong Province like Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan.
Companies from Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, and the provinces of Henan, Hebei and many others.
Speaking with ACE, Mr. Thomas Chen the Operations Manager of MEORIENT, a Guangzhou based company said he was also in Nigeria for the first time but optimistic of the gains of the exhibition and possibilities of Chinese and Nigerian business community knowing each other better.
Some others who accepted to speak assured that the business exhibition would not be a one-off event and hope it would be an annual event.
China has remains a major trading partner of Nigeria which the Central Bank of Nigeria said 45% of businesspeople travelling for business demand for Chinese yuan and travel to China. The bank had given that reason as justification for the Nigeria-China currency swap agreement.
